Virat Kohli, India's
vice-captain, reached a rare milestone on Friday. He now sits as a joint
fastest batsman along with Viv Richards to reach the 5000-run mark in ODI
cricket. Sir Viv Richards of West Indies achieved the feat in 114 innings way
back in 1987. But it was Viv's 126th match.
Kohli bagged 86 runs against West Indies in the first ODI in Kochi on
Thursday.
Kohli clinches this
wonderful record just in 120 matches and 114 innings. He has so far seized 5005
runs, which included 17 centuries and 27 fifties.
Kohli(at 25 years 16
days) as the second youngest batsman achieved the distinction, next only to
Sachin Tendulkar(23 years 294 days ).
Before Kohli, former
Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly was the fastest to achieve the feat among Indian
batsmen in 131 matches and 126 innings.
Among Indians,
skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (135 innings), Gautam Gambhir (135 innings) and
Sachin Tendulkar (138 innings) are the next fastest batsmen to reach the 5000
runs mark in ODIs.
